Fishing In Cabo Pulmo

Anglers at Cabo Pulmo catch most pelagic species common to Baja California Sur waters. We regularly see (depending upon the season, of course) dorado, also known in Hawaii as mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo, snapper, grouper, sailfish, and marlin. The Castro family operates a fleet of 22-foot, center console fishing boats, called “pangas”. Local captains are excellent fishermen, outstanding water men and know the area well. Our favorite guides is Kiki Castro. The rates are excellent, costing $195.00 for a half-day, 4-hour excursion, for up to 3-anglers per boat; fishing licences are $15.00 per person; fresh bait is $25.00; tipping is extra (we usually tip at least 20%; if you’ve had a spectacular catch, adjust upward!). Rods, reels, and lures are provided, although fishermen are welcome to bring their own gear. The Castros also cater to fly-fishermen.

Fishing within Cabo Pulmo National Park is prohibited in order to protect the living coral reefs, however the marine park and protected waters are quite small, and it’s only a short boat ride to deep waters outside the Park boundaries. Reef species like grouper and cabrilla can be fished for outside the Park as well, also a short boat ride away, just south of Bahia Los Frailes.
